The Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority (MERA) wishes to inform the general public that the country’s main fuel supply route through Tanzania, via Dar es Salaam and Tanga ports has faced service challenges due to post-election violence.  Stakeholders in the fuel supply chain are, however, making every effort to ensure continuity of flow of fuel supplies into the country.

This week, the National Oil Company of Malawi (NOCMA) and the Petroleum Importers Limited (PIL) reported a blockage in the movement of fuel from Dar es Salaam. Since 29 October 2025, one hundred and twenty (120) fuel tankers have not crossed the border between Tanzania and Malawi. In addition, berthing of vessels has been suspended which has affected clearance of forty-eight (48) million litres of diesel and petrol from the port of Tanga destined for Malawi.

The Malawi Government is assuring the fuel sector that the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania has affirmed its commitment to helping facilitate the clearance of fuel destined for Malawi from the ports of Dar es Salaam and Tanga.

Additional fuel volumes have been secured at the ports of Beira and Nacala in Mozambique and Msasa in Zimbabwe to minimise the impact of delays in clearing consignments from the Tanzanian ports.

MERA would like to thank all stakeholders and the public for their patience and cooperation as the responsible fuel industry players work tirelessly towards stabilisation of fuel availability.
