Day Two of Malawi Energy Week Shines Spotlight on Electric Vehicles
The second day of the Malawi Energy Week was a success, with a major highlight being the showcasing of an electric vehicle from Blue Zone, one of the entities regulated by the Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority (MERA). The event, held as part of MERA’s participation in the Energy Week, gave attendees a unique opportunity to test drive the eco-friendly car.
The electric vehicle on display was not only environmentally friendly but also very affordable, making it an attractive option for those looking to reduce their carbon footprint. Temwanani Mweso, a Renewable Energy Regulation Specialist at MERA, encouraged individuals to take advantage of the benefits of electric vehicles, saying they offer a cleaner, more sustainable transportation option for Malawi’s future.
Currently, MERA is working on developing an e-mobility framework that will guide the adoption and integration of electric vehicles in the country. The authority is also collaborating with neighboring countries to learn from their experiences and best practices in promoting e-mobility.
MERA is also actively participating in the E-Mobility Steering Committee, chaired by the Ministry of Energy with support from the World Bank, to drive the country’s e-mobility agenda forward.
Additionally, MERA has worked with the Malawi Bureau of Standards to update the Malawi Wiring and Installation Standard to incorporate technical requirements for electric vehicles. This will provide a clear guideline for the safe installation and charging of electric vehicles, supporting the growth of the e-mobility sector in Malawi.
The showcase of the electric vehicle from Blue Zone was a testament to MERA’s commitment to promoting sustainable energy solutions and reducing the country’s reliance on fossil fuels. By providing a platform for the public to engage with electric vehicles, MERA aims to raise awareness about the benefits of e-mobility and encourage its adoption.
The Malawi Energy Week continues to provide a valuable platform for stakeholders in the energy sector to come together and discuss issues related to energy regulation, renewable energy, and energy efficiency. With MERA’s efforts, the event is helping to shape the future of energy in Malawi and promote a more sustainable and environmentally friendly energy landscape.
