The Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority (MERA) has thrown its weight behind DEK Engineering, a local company, to showcase their innovative energy efficient solutions at the World Creativity and Innovation Day 2024. The event, held at the Bingu International Convention Centre, brought together innovators, entrepreneurs, and policymakers to celebrate creativity and innovation in various sectors.

Also supported at the event was Livingstonia based Chipopoma Mini- grid providing electricity to over 120 houses, lodges, schools and small businesses in the community.

President Lazarus Chakwera, who graced the occasion, encouraged Malawians to embrace innovation and think beyond academic qualifications, emphasizing that creativity and innovation are key drivers of economic growth and development.

“I am impressed by the innovative solutions showcased here today, particularly the locally made energy efficient bulbs and the Chipopoma Mini-grid initiative. These initiatives demonstrate the potential of Malawian ingenuity and entrepreneurship,” President Chakwera said.

MERA’s Consumer Affairs and Public Relations Manager, Fitina Khonje, introducing DEK Engineering to President Chakwera and First Lady, Madam Monica Chakwera.

MERA’s support for the two organisations aligns with its mandate to promote sustainable energy development and reduce the country’s reliance on imported energy solutions. The regulatory body has been instrumental in creating an enabling environment for local entrepreneurs to thrive in the energy sector.

“Our goal is to facilitate a sustainable energy future for Malawi, and initiatives like these bring us closer to achieving that vision,” said MERA’s Consumer Affairs and Public Relations Manager, Fitina Khonje.

The World Creativity and Innovation Day 2024 provided a platform for innovators, policymakers, and industry stakeholders to exchange ideas, share knowledge, and explore opportunities for collaboration.
