On March 8, 2025, the world celebrated International Women’s Day, a date dedicated to honouring the achievements of women and advocating for gender equality. This year, the commemoration took place at Amaryllis Hotel in Blantyre, where the Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority (MERA) took an active role in supporting the Ministry of Gender in the planning and execution of this significant event.

The day’s festivities commenced with a lively business breakfast, designed to bring together women from all walks of life. This gathering provided a unique platform for attendees to share their experiences and exchange ideas surrounding business development. The atmosphere buzzed with inspiration as women discussed their journeys, challenges, and triumphs in various industries.

The event was graced by the presence of the Deputy Minister of Gender, Community Development and Social Welfare, Halima Daudi, who served as the guest of honour. In her keynote address, Daudi emphasized this year’s theme: “All women and girls rights, equality, and empowerment.” She underscored the importance of developing skills among women and girls to ensure they have equal opportunities in all sectors of society. “Empowerment is not just a goal; it is a necessity. We must work together to cultivate an environment where women and girls can thrive,” Daudi stated passionately.

Martha Kalumbi, Principal Gender and Development Officer in the Ministry, appreciated the role that MERA played towards success of the commemoration. “MERA’s commitment, time, and resources were essential in making the event a success,” she added, illustrating how crucial partnerships are in advocating for gender equality.

MERA’s involvement in International Women’s Day is a testament to its dedication to fostering gender equality and empowerment within the community. As part of its ongoing efforts, MERA continues to engage with various stakeholders to raise awareness about its roles and mandate, ensuring that its initiatives resonate with the public.

Throughout the month of March, MERA is showcasing empowering messages from its female workforce, aimed at accelerating action towards gender equality. These initiatives are designed not only to inspire but also to mobilize individuals and organizations around the cause of women’s rights.
