MERA Celebrates International Clean Energy Day, Showcases Malawi’s Clean Energy Progress
The Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority (MERA) today commemorated International Clean Energy Day with a focus on “Powering Progress: Clean Energy Solutions for Malawi’s Development.” The event brought together stakeholders from government, civil society, and the private sector to highlight the country’s efforts in adopting clean energy solutions.
In his remarks, representative from the Ministry of Energy, Chief Energy Officer Gift Chiwayula, acknowledged MERA’s pivotal role in regulating and promoting clean energy, citing the authority’s efforts in developing guidelines on net metering and inspectors. MERA Acting Chief Executive Officer, Dad Chinthambi, emphasized the importance of the day, highlighting the need for continued investment in clean energy to drive Malawi’s development.
The event featured a presentation and a panel discussion on the theme, with participants calling for increased collaboration and investment in the sector. MERA also gave regulated entities in the clean energy sector an opportunity to showcase their products, including Presscane, Sun King, FISD, and Ecogen.
“Clean energy is key to addressing climate change, improving public health, and driving socio-economic development,” said Chinthambi. “We need to work together to accelerate the adoption of clean energy solutions in Malawi.”
The commemoration highlights Malawi’s efforts to increase access to energy, with clean energy seen as a critical component of the country’s development agenda. With over half of the population lacking access to reliable energy, the transition to clean energy is more pressing than ever.
The event was a resounding success, with stakeholders agreeing that clean energy is the way forward for Malawi’s progress.
