MERA Teams Up with MCHF for Cleaner Cooking Demonstration at Lilongwe City Mall

The Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority (MERA) partnered with Modern Cooking for Healthy Forests (MCHF) for a significant cleaner cooking demonstration held at Lilongwe City Mall on May 25th, 2024. This demonstration marks a continuation of ongoing efforts to promote sustainable cooking practices and raise awareness about the environmental benefits of transitioning from traditional charcoal to cleaner energy sources, particularly Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG).

During the demonstration, MERA staff took center stage, showcasing the versatility and efficiency of different types of LPG cylinders. They provided invaluable insights into LPG business opportunities, highlighting its potential to not only improve cooking methods but also foster economic growth. Attendees were treated to a culinary journey as MERA staff cooked a diverse array of dishes, including meat, rice, popcorn, beans, and fritters, all prepared using LPG.

Delta Gas, a licensed gas supplier, generously provided free gas for the cooking demonstration, further emphasizing their commitment to promoting sustainable energy solutions.

As a regulator, MERA has taken proactive steps to educate the public about cleaner cooking methods. The rampant use of charcoal has had devastating effects on the environment, leading to widespread deforestation. By advocating for the adoption of LPG and other clean energy alternatives, MERA aims to mitigate the adverse impact of environmental degradation caused by deforestation. Speaking at the event, a representative from MCHF underscored the importance of collaborative efforts in addressing environmental challenges. “Our partnership with MERA exemplifies our collective commitment to preserving our forests and promoting sustainable development,” they remarked.

Through continued advocacy and education, MERA and its partners are paving the way for a cleaner, healthier, and more environmentally friendly Malawi.
