Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority (MERA) would like to confirm that replenishment of stock for fuel retail outlets has resumed.

The Malawi Defence Force and Malawi Police Service are engaged in the distribution of fuel and providing controls at the retail outlets.

The response to the fuel supply disruption is being coordinated by the National Liquid Fuels and Gas Emergency Management Committee (NLFGEMC) established under the National Liquid Fuels and Gas Emergency Response Plan developed in 2019. The Committee which is chaired by the Ministry of Energy comprises representatives from various government ministries and departments, Liquid Fuels and Gas Importers, and Oil Marketing Companies.

MERA would like to reaffirm that the country has sufficient internal stocks. However, the general public is advised to refrain from panic buying of fuel since this contributes to the disruption of the flow of fuel supplies.

On the other hand, while MERA officers have been inspecting retail outlets to ascertain compliance with licencing conditions and guard against malpractices, the general public is encouraged to complement the regulator’s efforts by reporting suspected fuel hoarding to the following numbers: 0992558564 or 0999896310
