The Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority (MERA) has noted with concern that most Liquid Fuels and Gas (LFG) transportation operators are operating with an expired or without an LFG transportation licence.

All LFG transportation licensees are hereby reminded to renew their licences for the year 2026/2027 and clear any outstanding fees by 15 July 2026. Failure to renew, settle outstanding fees, or comply with all regulatory requirements by this date may result in the recovery of unpaid fees with interest, the imposition of monetary administrative penalties, and/or revocation of the licence without exception or recourse.  A list of valid transportation licensees can be accessed from the MERA website: www.mera.mw/regulatedentities and shall be published in the media after 15 July 2026.

All other LFG licensees are hereby directed to only engage transporters that hold a valid LFG transportation licence for transportation of liquid fuels and gas. Failure to comply with this directive shall result in appropriate regulatory action on the respective licensee.

LFG Transportation operators are further reminded that it is against the law to operate in the Energy sector without a valid licence. Operating without a valid licence is an offence whose punishment upon conviction is a fine of MWK50 million and imprisonment for ten years in line with the Energy Laws.

This notice therefore serves as a formal WARNING to all persons who are establishing, operating, carrying on, or otherwise involved in LFG transportation in Malawi without a licence issued by the Authority, contrary to section 28 of the Energy Regulation Act. Under section 28 of the  Act, any person who contravenes this prohibition commits an offence. All such persons are hereby warned and directed to apply for and obtain a transportation licence and to comply fully with the law, by 15 July 2026. Any person who fails to comply by 15 July 2026 will be ordered to cease operations, and the Authority will pursue any other available legal remedies, including prosecution under the Energy Laws.

The Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority (MERA) is participating in this year’s Trade Fair with renewed commitment to creating an enabling environment for players in the sector. MERA has taken its place at the 36th Malawi International Trade Fair at Chichiri Trade Fair Grounds, showcasing innovators and renewable energy suppliers who are shaping the future of energy in Malawi.
As a regulator, MERA promotes sector players at trade shows and exhibitions to advance safe, reliable, and sustainable energy access. This year, MERA is exhibiting alongside PowerPlus Control Systems and Waste and Innovation Hub, two Malawian enterprises providing practical clean energy solutions.
During his tour of pavilions, Minister of Industrialisation, Business, Trade and Tourism Simon Itaye listened as Waste and Innovation Hub Founder and Project Leader, Moses Kamchedzera shared his vision of refining the Hub’s petrol and diesel project, produced from plastic waste, for wider use. Kamchedzera explained that the product had passed its first test with the Malawi Bureau of Standards but requires funding to refine it further for commercial rollout. The Hub also converts other waste materials into cleaner energy sources such as biogas and briquettes, showing how waste can be turned into power for homes and small businesses.
PowerPlus Control Systems is also under MERA’s stand. The company builds, installs, and maintains solar systems for both household and industrial use, supporting the shift to affordable, renewable power.
Addressing the exhibitors after the tour, the Minister said this year’s theme ‘Promoting economic stability through enhanced production and industrialisation’, demonstrates the link between increasing industrial capacity and overall economic growth. “These displays speak directly to the theme. When our industry players increase production and adopt new technologies, we strengthen industrial capacity and support economic stability,” he said.
Through its presence at the Trade Fair, MERA continues to facilitate market linkages and ensure consumers benefit from safe, innovative, and cost-effective energy solutions in line with its strategic goals.

The Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority has used this year’s Malawi Defence Force Sports Festival to brief military personnel on its mandate and operations in the energy sector. The festival is underway at the Malawi Armed Forces College and runs from May 11 to 15.
Athletes from different MDF units are competing in football, netball, volleyball, basketball, athletics, boxing, golf, chess, table football and other disciplines.
Opening the event, Chief of Defence General George Alexander Jaffu described the gathering as a reflection of unity and discipline within the force. He said it also provides an opportunity to evaluate performance and rebuild the MDF’s standing in national sport. He urged participants to uphold focus, integrity and sportsmanship.
MERA’s engagement with the officers and soldiers placed particular emphasis on the lakeshore district, where illegal fuel vending remains a persistent challenge.

The Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority engaged future engineers at the Malawi University of Science and Technology (MUST) Chapter of Engineers Institute of Malawi(EIM) symposium in Blantyre on Friday.
MERA representatives, including Temwani Mweso, Renewable Energy Regulation Specialist, responded to key takeaways presented at the symposium. Mweso said engineers are key drivers of industrialisation and national transformation under Malawi Vision 2063. He also said innovation, practical engineering skills, and sustainable energy solutions are essential for achieving Malawi’s industrialisation agenda.
The symposium brought together engineers and students for a series of technical and policy discussions before concluding later in the day.

The Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority has used the Price Stabilisation Fund (PSF) and Automatic Pricing Mechanism (APM) to reduce and stabilize fuel prices for consumers.
Speaking during a press briefing today, MERA CEO Dad Chinthambi explained that the PSF is being applied to cushion Malawians from sharp fluctuations in global fuel markets by absorbing excess costs when import prices rise. At the same time, the APM is guiding regular, transparent adjustments to pump prices based on changes in international oil prices, exchange rates, and other cost factors.
As part of the latest review, MERA announced a 6.94% reduction in the pump price of petrol and a 1.96% reduction in kerosene, while prices for other fuel products remain unchanged. The adjustments reflect the application of both the PSF and APM mechanisms.
“MERA’s mandate is to ensure fair and stable fuel pricing,” CEO Dad Chinthambi said during the briefing. “Through the PSF and the APM, we are working to reduce the impact of volatile international oil prices on Malawian households and businesses while maintaining transparency in how prices are set.”
The Authority did not specify the duration of the stabilization measures but reiterated its commitment to monitoring global market trends and adjusting pricing in line with the fund’s capacity and APM calculations.
